About SIRC

With over 6.5 million pages of sport related research dating as far back as the 1700’s and encompassing over 62 different languages, SIRC is the world’s leading sport resource centre. SIRC’s goal is to collect, archive, and share qualified sport information with sport enthusiasts in Canada and around the world.

Since 1973, SIRC has been Canada’s Sport Information Resource Centre. Based in Ottawa, SIRC is a not-for-profit corporation that serves the sporting community through:

Knowledge in Action

Information becomes knowledge once it can be received and applied. SIRC’s goal is to collect and archive educational sport information and to ensure individuals and organizations involved in sport are aware of and have access to it. SIRC helps all Canadians, from coast-to-coast-to-coast, find information about the sport they love. SIRC believes information should be easy, affordable and fast. SIRC brings information together, qualifies it, and makes it easy to find 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.

Academic Excellence

SIRC is pleased to encourage academic and sporting excellence. We are an active supporter of all levels of academic excellence, ranging from the esteemed SIRC Research Award (valued at $10,000) at the university level, to the SIRC-CCAA Academic All Canadian Award for colleges, and practical support for numerous K-12 school libraries.

Communication

SIRC’s primary communication channel is through the websites, www.sirc.ca, www.canadiansport.ca, and www.sportcanadien.ca which receive over 3.5 million hits per month. In addition, SIRC’s email distribution service is the central vehicle for the sporting community to communicate with national, provincial and international sport groups, media, universities and government agencies and our Job Board has become a leading resource for sport related employment opportunities.

Virtual Library

SIRC is in the process of digitizing much of its collection. The goal is to create a virtual library so that visitors can search the extensive collection on-line and obtain the complete document electronically. SIRC simplifies the process for organizations and individuals, by being the single point of contact for handling copyright and distribution issues. SIRC has contacted hundreds of publishers, authors, and copyright agencies to ensure the material can be archived electronically and safely sent to individuals, researchers and association members. With 700,000 sources of information indexed, SIRC maintains over 8,000 titles in its collection and receives thousands of new and continuing titles on a regular basis. The SIRC Collection continues to grow while preserving the legacy of sport information and culture, as well as anticipating the needs of the sporting community, academic institutions, and government researchers.

Podium Success

Since information is vital to success on the podium, SIRC has ensured that coaches, athletes, and administrators at major games have access to the SportDiscus.  As such, SIRC has been present at the Olympic Games, World and National Championships, Canada Games and the Arctic Games.
