Athletes want to push themselves to train as much and as hard as possible. Along with this comes the danger of overtraining and burnout. Overtraining has numerous negative side effects, which can set an athlete months behind in their training.

How Much Exercise is Too Much

The experts can hardly agree on recommendations for a minimal amount of exercise, although the range is about 30 to 60 minutes most days, and even up to 90 minutes if you are trying to lose weight. The definition of "too much exercise" is an even more complicated matter, and has to do with the effect exercise is having on your health and well-being. Getting too much exercise is just as bad as getting too little exercise, since it can lead to long-tern health problems and the disruptions in personal life that result from addiction and compulsive behavior.

Avoiding and Overcoming Burnout

As with many other aspects of life, it is easier to spot overtraining in others than in ourselves. In this article, we will examine the causes of overtraining and how to get back into a rested state, ready for further training and racing. Depending upon a number of factors, a particular level of training may be too much for a given runner at that stage in his or her running career, or it could be just the right amount to prepare for an upcoming race. Keep in mind that each individual and each situation is different. We will try to identify truths applicable to most ultrarunners.

Negative Effects of Overreaching and Overtraining

A major sports challenge for coaches today involves helping their athletes develop an effective balance, between their training, competition, recovery, rest cycles. The balance challenge consists of determining the amount and type of training stress, competition stress, recovery, and rest away from a sport, an athlete experiences. An imbalance in the cycles described above, in combination with non-athletic stress, such as that experienced at home, work and/or school life, can lead to overreaching and eventually overtraining.

Over-Training Syndrome

Many athletes complain of experiencing a suppressed athletic performance often in conjunction with a number of other symptoms at some time during their career. Among others, these symptoms may include chronic fatigue, disturbed mood states, increased susceptibility to upper respiratory tract infections, changes in resting heart rate and disturbances in sleep patterns.
