Physical Education
Physical activity is important for a child’s health and well-being. Physical Education is an excellent way to ensure children participate in physical activity on a regular basis and to help educate on the benefits of healthy living. Participating in sports and physical activity has been proven to benefit all aspects of a child’s life including their self-esteem, health, work ethic and discipline.
SIRC is pleased to support Canadian School Sport Week, October 20-24, 2008. We would also like to thank Physical and Health Education Canada (PHE Canada), for their assistance with this issue of the SIRC Newsletter.

Qualified Physical Education Teacher
Defining the quantifiable elements of a highly qualified physical education teacher is a very daunting challenge. For the past two years, a task force of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) has worked on describing characteristics associated with highly qualified physical education teachers. The task force believes that the definition of a highly qualified physical education teacher should involve more than simply being licensed to teach physical education.

Getting the Non-Specialist Teacher Involved
A considerable amount of time is currently being taken up in physical education circles discussing the definition and competencies of a qualified physical educator. No matter what the criteria are, the reality in some jurisdictions is that at the elementary level, most of the school's physical education program is taught and implemented by non-specialist teachers. As a Principal entrusted with the delivery of physical education in my school, I would like to share some pointers for how generalist teachers may be supported to help implement and maintain a quality physical education program

Quality Daily Physical Education
Today, there is mounting evidence to show that we are facing a physical inactivity and obesity
crisis in Canada. For a variety of reasons (changing lifestyles, more sedentary pastimes, lack of
skills or habits), children and youth are more inactive than ever before. Regardless of the reason,
it is imperative that these disturbing trends are reversed.

Ask A SIRC Librarian |
|

SIRC members have access to SIRC librarians and we are pleased to share some of your questions.
Dear SIRC Librarian:
I am a member of SIRC and was wondering if there is a fee to view/read articles on-line? I wanted to research information on reverse periodization and found a list of 3, but could not figure out if I had to order a copy to view the full document.
Thanks
Michele,
Provincial Coach
