Boomers More Active Than Their Counterparts Were 10 Years Ago
Baby Boomers appear more adventuresome and more fitness oriented compared to their counterparts of 10 years ago, according to data gleaned from the same NSGA participation studies.
Among activities with more than one million 45-54 year old participants in 2001, the highest growth took place in backpacking (138%), target shooting (109%), working out at a club (90%), hiking (67%), and basketball (61%). Since 1991, 45-54 year olds (the first wave of the Baby Boomers) have grown by 40% while the U.S. population grew 10%.
Other activities in which the first wave of Boomers exceeded their population growth were dart throwing and billiards (both 44%). They almost matched their population growth rate in camping (39%) and running/jogging (37%).
Increases in Boomer participation in the last 10 years were seen in golf (33%), exercise walking (23%), hunting with firearms (19%), motor/power boating (18%), aerobic exercising (15%), bowling (14%), swimming (12%), and fresh water fishing (10%).
Activities showing declines in Boomer participation in the last 10 years were salt water fishing (-6%), bicycle riding (-22%) and tennis (-23%).
