2005 SIRC Research Award - Official Launch

Ottawa September 27, 2005 - SIRC (Sport Information Resource Centre) is proud to announce the official launch of the 2005 SIRC Research Award.  The Research Award recognizes outstanding sport research that benefits the Canadian sporting community.  SIRC invites Canadian university students and faculty to submit their original sport related research for consideration of this prestigious award.   SIRC introduced the award in 2003 and has been promoting sport research in Canada and around the world for over 30 years.

We are very proud to acknowledge sport research and to ultimately showcase the award recipients work to a worldwide audience.  The continuation of support from CIHR – Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis, Wellness Options, Human Kinetics, McGraw-Hill Ryerson and Wilson Sports is greatly appreciated.   In addition, we welcome EBSCO Publishing as a brand new sponsor.

“Interest in sport research has and will continue to be in great demand.  With Canada hosting the 2010 Olympics we have a wonderful opportunity to further highlight the significant contributions and advancements being made by canadian researchers” says Debra Gassewitz, CEO and President of SIRC.

Winning a SIRC Research Award provides a wide range of opportunities to the recipient.  Dr. Martin Gibala, an Associate Professor of the Department of Kinesiology and the Co-Director of the Exercise Metabolism Research Laboratory at McMaster University has had a very rewarding year as the 2004 SIRC Research Award Winner in the category of High Performance.  According to Dr. Gibala, "SIRC was the first organization to recognize the potential impact of our recent work that described the benefits of brief, intense exercise training. Shortly after I received the 2004 SIRC Research Award interest in our work exploded”.

This year, the 2005 SIRC Research Award has two categories:

  • The social impact of sport on the community
  • The impact of applied research on athletic excellence / high performance

The social impact category will encompass areas such as culture and sport, as well as the impact of sport in health and/or achieving success.   The impact of applied research on athletic excellence / high performance will encourage quantitative research in the areas of psychology, physiology, medicine and kinesiology.

One winner and an honorable mention will be named for each of the categories.   Over $10,000.00 in cash and prizes will be awarded to the winners.
