2007 SIRC Research Award - Official Launch
Ottawa September 19, 2007 - SIRC (Sport Information Resource Centre) is proud to announce the official launch of the 2007 SIRC Research Award. The Research Award recognizes outstanding sport research that benefits the Canadian sporting community. SIRC invites Canadian university students and faculty to submit their original sport related research for consideration of this prestigious award. SIRC introduced the award in 2003 and has been promoting sport research in Canada and around the world for over 30 years.
We are very proud to acknowledge sport research and to ultimately showcase the award recipients work to a worldwide audience. The continuation of support from CIHR – Institute of Musculoskeletal Health, EBSCOhost and Wellness Options is greatly appreciated.
“Sport research benefits the athletes striving for excellence and the communities who use sport as a tool for social development” says Debra Gassewitz, CEO and President of SIRC. “The SIRC Research Award strives to recognize the significant contributions and advancements being made by Canadian researchers.”

I commend SIRC and the Award sponsors for their commitment to sport research in Canada.” Dr. Alison Doherty, Associate Professor in the School of Kinesiology, Faculty of Health Sciences at The University of Western Ontario, 2006 SIRC Research Award Winner, community category. Winning the 2006 SIRC Research Award has provided Dr. Doherty with numerous opportunities, "There are currently efforts underway to forge closer links between sport and other areas of community volunteerism so that the voluntary sector as a whole in Canada may benefit from shared strategies, better practices, and increased awareness in our society. The recognition and public promotion of my paper that the SIRC Award brings is a valued contribution to these particular efforts. I wish SIRC all the best in continuing this competition, and I will be sure to encourage my colleagues and students to considering becoming involved.”
This year, the 2007 SIRC Research Award has two categories:
- The social impact of sport on the community
- The impact of applied research on athletic excellence / high performance
The social impact category will encompass areas such as culture and sport, as well as the impact of sport in health and/or achieving success. The impact of applied research on athletic excellence / high performance will encourage quantitative research in the areas of psychology, physiology, medicine and kinesiology.
The winner of each category will receive international exposure, prizes and $2,000. Prizing includes a one-year individual membership to SIRC, providing access to the SIRC Collection and the SIRC Document Delivery service.
